Evaluations

Evaluations for the upcoming season will be held at the Newark Memorial High School pool on

Saturday, March 4th from 10:00 - 11:00 am

Evaluations occur regardless of the weather; rain or shine, coaches will be at the pool reviewing swimmers.

Potential new swimmers are requested to swim the length of the pool (25 yards) in all four strokes - freestyle, back, butterfly and breast. Have your child arrive to the pool wearing a swimsuit and sandals or flip flops, and with a towel to dry off with. While the pool area has restrooms, it does not have locker rooms nor showers. Each evaluation should take approximately 20 minutes. If the child requires some assistance in the water (e.g. unable to swim the entire length of the pool or becomes uncomfortable in the water), then a coach or returning swimmer may be in the water alongside the child to assist as needed. Prior to coming to Evaluations, please complete the registration form below.

Coaches' decision to invite a new swimmer to join the team is based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to the following:

  • Whether the potential new swimmer knows how to swim each stroke (not a requirement)
  • How far the potential new swimmer can swim each stroke across the length of the pool
  • Number of returning swimmers in the potential new swimmer's age group

After evaluation, the potential new swimmer will be notified on whether he/she/they has been invited to join the team. If the swimmer has been invited to join the team, then congratulations and welcome to the Newark Bluefins Family! If the swimmer has not been invited to join the team, then we thank you for participating in our evaluations but are sorry we cannot extend an invitation to you at this time; however, we hope that you try again next year as each year the factors in evaluating potential new swimmers could change slightly.

Prospective New Swimmers

Any swimmer who is currently not a member of the Newark Bluefin team but who wishes to join the team must first be evaluated by our coaches. Evaluations are done in the Newark Memorial High School pool. Potential new swimmers are requested to swim the length of the pool (25 yards) in all four strokes - freestyle, back, butterfly and breast. Coaches' decision to invite a new swimmer to join the team is based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to the following:

  • Whether the swimmer knows how to swim each stroke (swimmers 8 years and younger are not required to know all four strokes; however, older swimmers are required)
  • How fast the swimmer can swim each stroke across the length of the pool
  • Number of returning swimmers in the potential new swimmer's age group

After evaluation, the potential new swimmer will be notified on whether he/she/they has been invited to join the team. If the swimmer has been invited to join the team, then congratulations and welcome to the Newark Bluefins Family! If the swimmer has not been invited to join the team, then we thank you for participating in our evaluations but are sorry we cannot extend an invitation to you at this time; however, we hope that you will try again next year as each year the factors in evaluating potential new swimmers could change slightly.

Returning Swimmers

Returning swimmers are not required to be evaluated each year. Newark Bluefins swimmers are evaluated once and are a team member until they are no longer eligible. The only exception to this is when a swimmer chooses to leave the team for a season and then wishes to return at a later season...in this situation, the swimmer must be evaluated by coaches again.

Swim Buddy Program

If your child would like to be "buddied" with another Newark Bluefins swimmer, then join our Swim Buddy program. Swim buddies motivate and encourage each other during practices as well as during swim meets. The program is a great way to get to know other swimmers and to create a fun and supportive environment for everyone. There is no cost associated with this program; however, throughout the swim season, swim buddies can choose to create handmade notes and crafts or purchase candy or treats to gift to each other (often these items are gifted during swim meets). If your child is interested in participating, then print, complete, and return to us the Swim Buddy document.
